The Ontario Public Interest Research Group Carleton (OPIRG Carleton) is a student run, student funded non-profit organization committed to social, environmental and economic justice.
OPIRG Carleton provides students with space to organize, skills training, a resource library, placement opportunities and access to multimedia equipment. The organization offers programming throughout the year featuring featuring critical thinkers, writers, musicians and artists. Past events have featured bell hooks, Sherene Razack, Jessica Danforth, Ashanti Alston, Naomi Klein, Noam Chomsky, Ward Churchill, Bonita Lawrence, David Suzuki, D'bi Young, Aamer Rahman and more. It also provides 4 bursaries to students annually.
OPIRG has positive impacts on campus that extend well beyond the walls of its office. For example, OPIRG volunteers led efforts to have Carleton divest from South African Apartheid. The organization was also instrumental in pushing for recycling and sustainability initiatives on campus.
OPIRG has been involved in diverse issues and campaigns since it began in 1980. The organization recognizes that some students strongly object to its social, environmental and economic justice mandate. For such students, we offer a levy refund. The levy opt-out period is:
Monday December 1st to Friday December 5th 2014. 10AM-4PM
If you require a refund visit, our office (RM 326 University Centre) and bring:
- your student ID
- Proof of enrollment showing your student status and number of credits for PT students*
- Proof of payment for Fall 2014 & Winter 2015*
